The end of the Dodge Viper production has been signaled when its last model rolled off the assembly line recently. It is however not the end of a memorable journey for the journey is to continue with the next generation Dodge models that has been confirmed by the company themselves. Dodge CEO Ralph Gilles has confirmed this bit of news and this was after an official announcement during a private show by Chrysler Dealer.
The next generation Viper would be distinguished with its aggressive design and would have a body work that has been painted 25 times in candy apple red. The general look of the car as per inside sources would be more like a traditional sports car rather than the race car that the present models resemble.

If you were always wondering how concept cars of 1960s looked like, this is it! This particular concept is the one that resulted in the legendary Dodge Charger. And you can now own it as it’ll be going under the hammer at RM Auction’s event at Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, on January 20th.

Besides the truly astonishing design, the 1964 Dodge Charger was also way ahead of its time in terms of the powertrain. It’s got an original HEMI race engine with over 600 hp. Granted, even though it’s restored and all it won’t be able to put out that much after 47 years! It also has a 3-speed automatic gearbox. Of course the technicalities are totally overshadowed by the swell looks of this thing. The car has a catalog price in the neighborhood of $1 million, but it’s expected to fetch more than that.

Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of the Dodge brand, recently gave an interview offering some fresh information on the replacement for the popular Dodge Viper that went out of production in July. Speaking at the Automotive News World Congress, Gilles said that the design of the new car had been inspired by “a naked woman on the beach”.
Short of actually giving us many details, Gilles confirmed only that the Viper will not use an engine from the Ferrari line-up. It looks almost certain that the car will return during 2012 as a 2013 model year car.
Elsewhere, Gilles also talked about the car being pitched in competition against Porsche and the Chevrolet Corvette.

Dodge’s current halo car, the Challenger, follows the trend of new power and drivetrains as well as reworked suspension, interior and exterior upgrades. When it first came out, immediately Dodge had something going for them. It was one of the rare cases where revitalizing the past has somewhat worked. The Challenger rings every petrolhead’s memories and imaginations because it’s a modern representation of what made American motoring so great back in the glory days of leaded fuel, long hoods, big engines and loud exhausts. But it fell short of the competition with a lackluster interior and boring road mannerisms and really, it was nothing more than a Charger in a more handsome suit with two of its doors cut off. Hopefully, the new updates will make the Challenger a better competitor amongst the blasts from the past, the Mustang and the new Camaro.

It's such a very satisfying sound: the "tick, tick, tick, tick" of a cooling exhaust manifold after you've opened up the full 425hp of the Dodge Challenger SRT8. Few automotive sounds are quite so calming and hypnotic. It's reminiscent of a sleeping beast recovering after the hunt, of water dripping from rooftops after the monumental scale torrent: the sound of raw Motown muscle relaxing.
And if you drive the V8 Hemi-powered 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 as tradition suggests, it's the sound you should relish every time you switch off the ignition. In fact, it is the engine and drive train that really makes this car. Under a hood with its slatted nostrils is the naturally aspirated 370-cubic-inch Hemi (you can't talk about muscle car powerplants as 6.1 litres - it just doesn't have the same ring). It is absolutely thunderous and the pipes are so beautifully tuned to burble pensively on idle like a purring lion, and to emit a Second World War fighter plane crackle and roar under acceleration.
And that acceleration is effortless. It's a ying and yang combination of the 569Nm of violent torque twisting the rear rubber until it squeals (even with traction control on) and the grace of the nose lifting like the prow of a ship as you head towards a five-second 100kph. Controlled in cabin by a fist-fitting T-shaped, chrome Mopar gearshifter, the five-speed auto gearbox has a range of ratios suited to both city traffic and the occasional burst of horizon-bending forward thrust. Occasionally, the transmission is a bit clunky when you accelerate and lift off, but in my mind that metallic, mechanical element should be present and be part of the character of a true muscle car.

The newest version of the Dodge Challenger has been on the market for over a year now, so you'd think people would be used to seeing them around. On the other hand there are at least two reasons people might not think of them as ordinary. One is that they are still fairly rare on the street, though there are half a dozen in our "neighborhood." The other is that many people don't see them as new cars.

A common question for us as we drove the new 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T was, "What year is it?" Apparently many people didn't recognize it as a "retro" design, but thought it was an original Challenger or even a Plymouth 'Cuda from the early 1970s. While that may be a nice tribute to Dodge for building a terrific retro car, it won't help them sell many.

For the record, the new Dodge Challenger is like the new Mini-Cooper: while it may have the same proportions as the original, it's actually a much larger car. That said, unless they are parked side by side, it's pretty tough to tell they aren't the same size.

The fact that the new Challenger is a fairly large car is a real bonus, simply because it's more versatile. (Not that it works for everyone. One woman was really interested in our pretty blue test car, but between them she and her husband have five kids. Even a really big sports coupe isn't going to fly for them)

Dodge president Ralph Gilles talked a little about the future of Dodge’s vehicles, stating that the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was just the beginning of Dodge’s plans. Today, a reader was able to catch another glimpse into their future with a photo taken of the backend of the 2011 Dodge Charger. He was able to catch the muscle car taking a break from its testing in Florida and, although it is still bandaged up, could see some revised taillights and some hid headlights. The reader was able to take a peek on the inside and that revealed a unique two-tone leather interior that he said “looked upscale for a Dodge.”

In last month’s discussion, Gilles mentioned that the company was looking into a “higher-power version of the Pentastar V-6 with unique power rating” for the 2011 Dodge Charger. The sounds coming from the exhaust of the test vehicle assured us that a higher power version was found and utilized. Another interesting feature our reader noticed was the square cutouts in the bumper housing the dual exhaust which is similar to the feature found on the Chevrolet Camaro.

Dodge welcomed more than 400 loyal Viper owners at its Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit recently to present the ultimate factory customized 2010 Dodge Viper coupe to proud new owner, D’Ann Rauh.

Rauh and her husband Wayne are from Arp, Tex.

The couple own more than 40 Dodge Vipers, the largest personal collection of Vipers in the world.

A member of the Mid-South Viper Club of America, D’Ann Rauh worked with the Dodge design team to select the personal touches she wanted on her car.

The custom bronzed gold exterior paint was supplied by House of Kolor.

The custom interior features various leather appointments, which were crafted by Tony Spampinito from Venzano, who has worked with the Rauhs on previous Viper projects.

Bob Soroka, from Chrysler Group LLC’s street and racing technology team, airbrushed layouts of Viper-significant racetracks into the custom-painted copper stripes applied by Prefix.

The five-spoke forged-aluminum wheels are custom painted in dark graphite.

Members from the Motor City Viper Club and the Viper Club of America participated in the celebration.

Rauh’s Viper is the last of the current-generation Vipers built at the plant.

Dodge has created more special-edition Viper models for the 2010 model year than all other model years combined.

Chrysler hasn't officially let loose with 2011 Dodge Challenger pricing, but you can build the car at the NADA Guide site and there are prices attached to the various options. It appears to be legit – even though the pictured coupe is a 2010, the new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and 6.4-liter Hemi for the SRT8 are listed as available options, though their horsepower ratings are shown as TBD.

Interestingly, if NADA's numbers are accurate, MSRPs have climbed substantially – a couple thousand dollars across the range. A base 2010 Challenger SE with the 3.6-liter V6 presently retails for $23,695, according to NADA, a 2011 needs $2,310 more, coming in at $26,055. The Coupe R/T jumps by $1,910, from $31,610 to $33,520. Get the R/T with the J Package and 20-inch wheels and pay $3,085 more, at $36,500, or go for the R/T Classic and pay $2,460 more than for a 2010, at $37,400. The 2011 SRT8 is $1,921 more, at $45,601. All prices include the $750 destination charge.

When it comes to paint colors, there's even more mixing and matching to do. Redline 3 Pearl, Green With Envy, Billet Metallic and Mango Tango Pearl are variously available (depending on the model you want to configure), and a number of colors on the Dodge site, like Inferno Red Crystal Pearl, aren't available anywhere. The Nitro is a strange beast; from a purely objective standpoint, it's a rebadged, somewhat reskinned version of the 2010 Jeep Liberty. From a practical standpoint, it's an old-style utility vehicle that aspires to be a car.

The Liberty is not known for terrific on-road prowess, and neither is the Nitro. The Nitro's ride is stiff, but its steering and handling doesn't deliver. The boxy packaging affords some good cargo configurations, and the Nitro is small and maneuverable enough for the city, yet performance is unremarkable. Acceleration isn't as quick as you'd expect from the standard 210-hp, 3.7-liter V-6; the 260-hp, 4.0-liter V-6 is adequate, though fuel economy is unimpressive in either case. What's more, with no low range and more vulnerable body cladding, this model isn't intended for off-roading.

The story doesn't get much better, as the Nitro's interior lacks refinement and the ride gets choppy at highway speeds while the steering requires constant corrections. Features are the only bright spot; a MyGIG entertainment system includes real-time traffic and music storage, while remote start, rear park assist, and a Bluetooth interface are available.

Dodge pulled the cover off the newest special-edition model of the 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 lineup. The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X is a turn-key, non-street legal race car that is slated to make its on-track debut in the summer of 2010.

"The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X takes the performance attributes of Viper to an even higher level for a wide range of drivers starting with the grassroots racer all the way up to the professional," said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand. "This project is a result of many years of performance engineering expertise from our SRT team, combined with the passion and dedication of Viper Nation, to keep the Viper racing tradition going strong on tracks around the country and the world."

Combining the best performance attributes of the record-setting, street-legal Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR (American Club Racer) and the safety equipment of championship-winning Viper Competition Coupe, the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X is powered by the SRT-developed 8.4-liter V10, equipped with factory headers and a low-restriction exhaust system, that produces 640 horsepower (40 more than production model).

The suspension also is tuned and upgraded specifically for on-track usage, while the weight is lightened by a full 160 pounds (versus the standard production Viper) to take on even the most challenging road course. Additional aerodynamic upgrades improve downforce, while enhancing stability and significantly improving grip in high-speed cornering.
Similar to the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, the Viper ACR-X contains factory-installed safety equipment such as a factory-designed roll cage, fuel cell and race seat. Additional racing components are added to meet the significant durability and reliability requirements for on-track competition.

In what will be the final year of production for the current generation Viper, the ACR-X is the third limited, special-edition model to be introduced by Dodge. "We're going to make 2010 the most exciting year for Viper yet with specially developed cars for the street and the track," added Gilles. "The ACR-X is targeted at road-racing enthusiasts who want to successfully compete in our ultimate American sports car."

Last month, the SRT team used a testing session at Laguna Seca raceway to shake down the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X for the first time. Behind the wheel was professional driver Kuno Wittmer from the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship series, who was able to run consistent 1:31.00 lap times around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn course. Wittmer's lap times were more than 3 seconds faster than the street-legal Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR that holds the production car track record at Laguna Seca raceway.

"The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X is incredible," said Wittmer. "After a short warm up, I was running lap times as quick as exotic GT race cars. I was blown away by the power and acceleration, and even more surprised at how the ACR-X navigated the challenging Laguna Seca corners and how friendly it was to drive at the limit.

"All aspects of the car work together perfectly to plant all that horsepower and torque without issue," Wittmer added. "This will be a great package for someone coming out of grassroots racing with a desire to step-up to GT level competition. Dodge nailed it with this one!"

The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X is designed to compete in the Viper Racing League, Sports Car Club of America and National Auto Sport Association events.

Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X will be approximately $110,000. Production is slated to begin in Spring 2010.

As the last model year for the current-generation 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 winds down, the Detroit automaker has given some of its dealers a crack at creating three special models. Just 50 cars are being built under this program, Dodge said on Monday.

The dealer-inspired SRT10s are striking. They include the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR Roadster, featuring a Race Yellow Clear Coat exterior with yellow driver's stripe, developed with Woodhouse Dodge of Blair, Nebraska. The second is the Reverse SRT10 ACR, featuring the reverse color combination of the Snakeskin Green Special Edition, developed with Tomball Dodge of Tomball, Texas. The last is a Black SRT10 Coupe with Plum Crazy dual racing stripes developed with Roanoke Dodge of Roanoke, Illinois.

If we were told to think of the places where you were most likely to find the nation's largest dealer of a large, growling, all-American sports car, Blair, Neb., probably wouldn't come to mind.

But there is Woodhouse Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep, right across from a street from a Wal-Mart that's being built in what used to be a corn field. We mentioned the dealer recently in a post about how Dodge is giving special editions of the sports car, the Dodge Viper, to three dealers. Then we heard from Woodhouse's Viper, SRT and Hurst manager, Bill Pemberton, who filled us in on the details.

"I sell the bulk of our cars to New York, New Jersey, California," Pemberton says. They contact Woodhouse in Blair, about 20 miles from Omaha, rather than their local dealer, because of its speciality tuning operation, he adds.

The ACR-X is a modified version of the Viper ACR, but one big difference is that the ACR-X isn't street legal, so don't plan on ordering a custom license plate for it. No, X doesn't mean all-wheel-drive; in fact, it doesn't have a denotation, except perhaps Xtreme. The ACR-X comes complete with a gutted interior, a full roll cage, a fire suppression system, a race seat, a six-point harness, and a MOMO steering wheel, all topped off with Michelin R compound racing slicks. It uses the ACR's same mammoth 8.4-liter V-10 engine, but here it produces a back-bruising 640 hp at 6100 rpm (40 hp more than the street-legal ACR) and 605 lb-ft of torque at 5100 rpm (45 lb-ft more than the ACR). The added thrust comes courtesy of engine programming and a free-flow exhaust system that is deafening inside the cockpit but manages to sound oh, so sweet. The six-speed manual transmission comes with a short-throw shifter that provides a sturdy feel.

Sticky accelerator pedal prompts Chrysler to recall Dodge Caliber

The recall, comprising of 34,614 Calibers and 90 Compasses, majority of them sold in the nation, are vehicles with model year 2007.

Toyota vehicles had a similar defect
The pedals in these vehicles were manufactured by the CTS Corp., an Elkhart, Indiana- based original equipment manufacturer.

The company claimed that given the throttle control technology, the accelerator pedals do not "present an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety."

In fact, the same manufacturer had supplied similar parts to Japan’s Toyota Motor Co. as well. Toyota, recalled 2.3 million vehicles in a series of recalls, wherein defective accelerator pedals led to unintended acceleration.

"Clearly, Chrysler and CTS have taken a look at what happened at Toyota and said they don't want that happening to them," said Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety.

Ditlowb was referring to the beating Toyota’s reputation took. Chrysler is wary of that and is putting all possible checks and balances in place to ensure that it does not get a negative publicity.

"Everybody has been paying much more attention since the Toyota recalls and product liability issues," said Aaron Jacoby, head of law firm Arent Fox law.

Dodge has announced a specially styled, limited-edition Viper model, which carries the name 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 Final Edition. Designed to mark exclusively the final year of production for the current-generation Dodge Viper, the newcomer will be manufactured in limited number of only 50 units worldwide.

The new 2010 Viper SRT10 Final Edition differs from its series counterpart by a sleek, Graphite finished exterior with painted black center stripe traced in red and unique side sill badges. The Coupe and ACR Final Edition models pack also a black windshield surround.

Inside, the limited ride renders black upholstery contrasted by custom red accent stitching, red painted halo surrounds on the gauge cluster and bright stainless steel screws in center stack bezel. A numbered dash plaque (1-50) is located on the shifter bezel just above the unique Viper Final Edition floor mats.

Under the 2-door American sports car’s bonnet, the specialists at Dodge have placed the well-known 8.4-liter V10 powerplant with 600 horsepower (450 kW) and 760 Nm of torque. Have you been looking for spy photos of the upcoming 2010 Dodge Charger? I found a couple of artist renders and they look terrific. They looked so good that I kept hunting for new information about the ’10. It looks like Dodge wants to go back to a 2-door “Coke-bottle” side view with integrated front headlights, but separate rear tail lights. Word on the net is that they want to equip the new model with different types of engines, the usual suspects apply; 3.0 Phoenix V6 for export, 3.6 Phoenix V6 280hp, 5.7 Hemi MDS 340hp and the 6.4 Hemi SRT 440hp. The 2010 Charger should be less boxy to help reduce road noise and improve gas mileage. The all-around performance should improve as well, with more horsepower expected from the revised V6 and Hemi engines.

The new Charger will probably run with an 8-speed automatic transmission, although the current five-speed should still be available. The next generation interior with new comfort features like an entertainment system and better driver amenities, it appears that the 2010 Charger will really make a statement!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating sticking gas pedals on about 10,000 Dodge Caliber compact cars.

In a small number of cases, parts of the gas pedal assembly have apparently fallen off, causing the pedals to come out of alignment and become stuck. The pedals involved in the cases are made by CTS Corp. the same supplier that made gas pedals involved in a massive Toyota recall for sticking gas pedals.

Dodge took the wraps off its 2010 Viper SRT10 Final Edition models on Tuesday. The company said it will build 20 coupes, 18 roadsters and 12 ACRs when the Final Edition models debut in early summer.

True to their name, the Final Edition models celebrate the Viper's final year of production. Output will be significantly less than the 2002 Viper Final Edition coupes and ACRs, which totaled 360 units, the automaker said. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Each model gets a Graphite Clear Coat body with a painted black center stripe outlined in red. Coupe and roadster models get six-spoke wheels painted in anthracite, while ACR models will come with five-spoke, black "Sidewinder" wheels.

The black interior has custom red accent stitching, red painted halo surrounds on the gauge cluster and bright stainless-steel screws in the center stack bezel. You'll find an individually numbered plaque on the shifter bezel.

The Final Edition models are equipped with the usual 600-horsepower 8.4-liter V10 engine.

The Dodge Viper is not slithering off into the desert unnoticed.

Chrysler Group LLC is preparing to start production of yet another limited run. This time it is the 2010 Viper SRT10 Final Edition; 50 will be made, each with numbered dash plaques.

The Final Editions will be built in three body types: 20 coupes, 18 roadsters and 12 ACR (American Club Racer) models, all marked by a black center stripe traced in red and unique side sill badges and floor mats. Red accents continue inside, in the stitching, on gauges and the center stack.

Powering the Vipers is the same V-10 that is in other SRT10 versions of the sports car that is in its final lap, with production at Detroit's Conner Avenue plant to cease by July.

Assembly of the Final Edition models begins in early summer.

Chrysler last month began making 50 Viper SRT10 ACR-X limited-edition models.

The automaker is exploring whether to revive the Viper name in 2012, but no decision has been made.

Dodge CEO Ralph Giles quickly announced their intent to offer a few special edition models of the Dodge Viper in 2010 – the last year of the current generation of Dodge’s supercar. One of those special editions was the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X, which combines the performance of the 2010 Viper ACR with the race-ready safety features of the Viper Competition Coupe and yesterday the very first 2010 ACR-X rolled off of the assembly line at Dodge’s Connor Ave plant.

This 640 horsepower Viper features a tuned version of the “normal” Viper V10, offering 40 more horsepower than the standard Viper ACR and the suspension components have been tuned to optimize the track capabilities of the ACR-X. The MSRP of the 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X is $110,000 and although that is a healthy chunk of change, Dodge is offering the Dodge Viper Cup featuring only ACR-X Vipers and this ten-race series offers ACR-X buyers the chance to win back some of that money.

Dodge also used the press release announcing the first production ACR-X to remind us of the special edition ACR 1:33 models as well as the Voodoo edition Dodge Viper (which is limited to just 20 units). Dodge states that there will be pricing available on the entire Viper lineup later in the year and at the of today’s press release Dodge teases us with this comment: Additional special-edition models will be announced closer to their individual introductions – leading us to believe that even more limited edition Dodge Vipers will be offered in the final year of this generation of the Dodge Viper.

The 2010 Dodge Challenger SE (re: the V-6-powered version of this “muscle car”) clearly can’t do what its better-endowed V-8 brothers are able to. That is: no massive acceleration, no fantastic soundtrack, and much less compensation for the weight penalty that the Charger-based car is born with. 2010 Dodge Challenger SEremains a surprisingly good handling vehicle—better roll stiffness and grip than most would expect—but I didn’t notice any real handing advantage from the lighter V-6 out front.

The Challenger SE does, unfortunately, suffer hugely on the expectation vs. reality scale; especially the car in question is loaded up with go-fast stripes and wheels. The public at large love this car: they want to hear its engine rev in parking lots, they want to race it away from the line at stop lights, they want it to live up to its muscle car image. The V-6 SE can’t cash any of those checks that its hot looks are writing. It is, instead, perfectly serviceable at highway speeds, a comfortable cruising coupe, and mildly more fuel efficient than the V-8 versions.

I guess, the Challenger SE is a pretty pitch perfect remake of the muscle cars that came before it in that regard—the V-6 cars have always been about the show, not the go.

And with six stripe options in the new wider configuration, five different interior color combinations, four different wheel choices and three available interior bezels; the 2010 Viper SRT10 will be available in more than 7,600 combinations–the most for any one model year–significantly adding to the exclusivity of each car like never before.

New across the Viper lineup is a shorter fifth gear ratio (changing from 0.74 to 0.80) for improved high-speed acceleration and higher straightaway speeds. Acceleration from 0-200 mph has improved by 14 seconds. This improvement is a direct result of the Chrysler Group LLC Street and Racing Technology team’s experience at the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany where during the lap-record run in 2008, it was found that a revised gear ratio would have resulted in higher top gear acceleration and a quicker lap time.

The Viper SRT10 channels its power through a ZF Sachs twin-disc clutch that reduces rotating inertia by 18 percent, reduces clutch-pedal effort and improves engagement feel. Transferring power to the rear wheels is a heavy-duty six-speed manual transmission.

Stopping power is another carefully developed part of the Viper SRT10 equation, with 14-inch brake rotors gripped by Brembo 44/40 dual-opposing piston calipers in the front and Brembo 42/38 dual-opposing calipers in the rear. This system results in world-class braking performance of 60-0 mph in less than 100 feet.

Interior color options for 2010 include: standard black, two-tone black and red with red accent stitching, two-tone black and blue with blue accent stitching, two-tone black and medium slate grey with medium slate grey accent stitching and the two-tone black and natural tan with premium tan Nappa leather seats, tan center console, lower instrument panel and door panels introduced for the 2009 model year. On the Roadster model, the black and tan package includes a matching tan cloth convertible top.

Viper SRT10 ACR

The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR receives a new short-throw shifter in 2010 for enhanced driver experience and better performance. The rear wing profile and end plates are redesigned to further optimize the vehicle aerodynamics and improve rear yaw downforce. These changes combined with the new fifth gear ratio result in an increased top speed of 4 mph (to 184 mph for the ACR model).

The enhanced four-wheel independent suspension features high-performance aluminum control arms and knuckles, KW suspension with two-way adjustable competition coil-over shock absorbers with remote reservoirs.

The aerodynamic package features a carbon fiber “fanged” splitter in front and adjustable carbon-fiber wing with seven-position stanchions that allow up to an amazing 1,000 lbs. of downforce at 150 mph. Lightweight wheels, two-piece slotted StopTech brake rotors and Michelin PS Cup tires round out the Dodge Viper ACR package.

New Special, Limited-edition Models

Numerous special, limited-edition models are planned for the 2010 model year, including the Dodge Viper ACR 1:33 Edition, which will pay tribute to the new production car lap record set on Nov. 24 at Laguna Seca raceway. The unique two-tone Black Clear Coat/Red Clear Coat exterior color scheme on this model is the opposite form of the original Viper ACR. Interior highlights include piano black console bezels with red gauge highlights complemented with red accent stitching in the seats. Only 33 cars will be produced as 1:33 Edition Viper ACR models.

The 2010 Vooodoo-edition Viper ACR will feature an all Black Clear Coat exterior with a Graphite Driver’s Stripe outlined in red. Only 10 cars will be produced with the unique striping on both the exterior, as well as on the steering wheel.

Back in November, Dodge chief Ralph Gilles made our mouths water by implying that Dodge would team up with Ferrari on a next-generation Viper, 2012 Dodge Viper but later stepped off the statement stating that the two companies were quite separate.

2010 Dodge Challenger SE, the popular retro offering from Chrysler's automotive division. The car reappeared to much fanfare in 2008, and has since emerged as a survivor even in times of recession.

Our tester came dressed in entry level trim of three available Challengers, the other two being the R/T 5.7 Hemi V8 and the SRT8 6.1 Hemi V8. The cost for the Hemi V8 powered Challengers, however, is way higher as the base priced for the 376 horsepower R/T is $31,585 while the SRT8 Hemi, which develops 425 horses, starts at $43,655.

With this in mind, we welcomed the opportunity to drive the V6 with its standard 5-speed "Auto Stick" automatic and came away pleasantly surprised. Specifically, the 3.5 Liter V6 with single overhead cam technology performs like a V8 from years ago, yet is capable of delivering 17 city and 25 highway EPA fuel mileage numbers. The high output V6 delivers 250 horsepower and an identical torque figure, helping motivate SE in a peppy manner. Another important aspect is weight, with the V6 lighter than the Hemi models by up to 321 pounds.

The designers have been able to bring down the curb weight by around 1000 pounds by eliminations several non-essential production components.

It features unique drag-racing components like a composite lift-off hood with functional scoop, polycarbonate door windows, Dodge Viper-style front seats, manual rack-and-pinion steering, a light-weight cooling module with electric fan, special light-weight front-brake assemblies, a special cable-operated deck-lid release and a special cable-operated throttle linkage and pedal assembly.

Dodge's latest (and most vibrant) limited edition Challenger: it's painted in a color Chrysler calls "Furious Fuscia."

That name may be new, but the paint certainly isn't. Once a part of Chrysler's wild "High Impact" color offerings, the hue -- known as "Panther Pink" on Dodge models and "Moulin Rouge" on Plymouths -- was only offered on 1970 models (although some 1971 cars were special ordered with the hue).

Fittingly, production of the Furious Fuscia Challenger will be just as short. Chrysler plans on limiting production of R/T Classic models in the color, although it has yet to establish a firm number for that limit. R/T Classic models will continue to use the 376-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, although cars equipped with the six-speed manual transmission will receive the "Trak Pak" -- which adds a pistol-grip shifter, performance exhaust, and a 3.92:1 limited-slip differential -- as standard equipment.

Challenger SRT8 models painted in the color will be even harder to find at dealers. Chrysler will build only 400 examples, with each car receiving a numbered dash plaque to indicate its exclusivity. All Furious Fuscia SRT8 models receive special satin-finished 20-inch wheels, quad exhaust tips, pearlescent white leather seating surfaces (an option on the R/T Classic), and an orange paint finish for the 6.1-liter V-8's block.

The Styling of the 2010 Dodge Demon comes from the V-10 Dodge Viper and will likely carry over with little change from the Demon. Amazingly the dimensions are very close to the Pontiac Solstice.

The Dodge Demon Concept is a “compact, nimble ‘roadster with attitude’” and “an attainable dream car,” according to its maker. To us, it was Chrysler’s answer to the Honda S2000, Mazda MX-5, Pontiac Solstice, and Saturn Sky. In early 2008, Chrysler announced the production version will use a front-wheel-drive chassis sourced from Chinese automaker Chery, so the Demon’s sporting pretensions may be in question.

As you’ve probably heard, former owner Mercedes-Benz sold a majority in Chrysler to Cerberus Capital Management. So it is not a complete surprise that the Demon’s mission may have changed along with ownership of the company. Assuming a best-case outcome, the general view is that your local Dodge Boys could be selling Demons by model-year 2010.

The 2010 Dodge Demon bowed in concept-car form at the 2007 Geneva Auto Salon in Switzerland, which observers took as a sign that the Demon would spearhead a major Dodge sales push into overseas markets, where the brand is largely unknown.

Chrysler has lately been trying to increase its non-U.S. business, no surprise given recent sales reverses at home. It’s not hard to imagine the Demon introducing Dodge as a sporty “performance” brand to Europe, as well as to fast-growing markets like China.

The 2010 Dodge Demon would be a “halo” vehicle to spark sales of mainstream fare like the compact Caliber hatchback and Avenger sedan. All of which explains why the Demon concept looks so realistic and producible compared to your average pie-in-the-sky show car.

Styling of the 2010 Dodge Demon borrows cues from the hulking V-10 Dodge Viper and would likely carry over with little change from the Demon concept. Ditto dimensions, which are very close to those of the Pontiac Solstice.

The Dodge Demon Concept used a 172-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission. At this point it is unclear if the 2010 Dodge Demon will use an engine that is part of the U.S.-built Global Alliance family shared with Mitsubishi and Hyundai, or an engine sourced from Chery.

The Dodge Demon Concept sported 19-inch wheels, which could be a bit much for a showroom model. Expect 17s to be standard, with 18s optional.

Other concept features would likely survive with little or no alteration. These include the semi-retro cockpit design heavy on brushed-metal trim (or facsimiles); a manual-folding cloth top that hides beneath a hard cover just behind the cockpit; and a stubby rollbar behind each seat to protect occupants in case of a flip.

The rest of the 2010 Dodge Demon package will hinge on marketing decisions based heavily on competitors’ pricing, but standards should include modern must-haves such as antilock disc brakes, traction control, and seat-mounted torso side airbags. We also wouldn’t rule out a turbocharged Demon as a year-two addition with standard stability control, performance-tuned suspension and special trim.

One thing that might be changed is the name, a point missed entirely by press reports we’ve seen. Perhaps the writers are too young to remember, but Dodge used Demon way back in 1971-72 for its version of the popular compact Plymouth Duster, complete with logo decals of a cute little cartoon devil. It was all innocent fun, Dodge thought, but some people thought otherwise and wrote nasty letters, enough that Dodge adopted the prosaic Dart Sport handle. Such are the perils of modern automotive marketing.

There’s really little we can give except to wait and see. The 2010 Dodge Demon could turn out to be the new star of affordable sports cars, but it could just as easily be a pale imitation of what’s already out there.

Impressive, no? Only 33 of these special Vipers are being built.

Mopar has always come up with something remarkable for the Dodge. The MOtor PARts division of the automaker doesn’t disappoint us at all with its New Year package for the Dodge Challenger. The appearance package highlights the retro design of the Dodge Challenger and imparts a high performance edge to the muscle-car.

Ever since its launch in 2008, the Dodge Challenger arguably posses the most retro design amongst the Detroit’s modern day muscle cars. Neither will one feel skeptical about the looks of the challenger that are nothing but aggressive. However, with the Performance Appearance Package Mopar looks to add something more to it.

“Our mission at Mopar is to add value to all of our brands,” stated Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO- Mopar Service, Parts and Customer Care, Chrysler Group. “Our ‘Moparized’ Dodge Challenger is a great example of how we can further enhance the value of all of our Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge Car and Ram Truck vehicles,” he added.

The new Performance Appearance Package form Mopar offers a body-color hood with a scoop, a body-color “Go-Wing” rear spoiler and also strobe stripe performance graphics. For enjoying these exterior features, one will have to cash in $1,995. Another $945 will give a separate package for the interior with a Mopar-branded T-handle shifter, silver-finish pedal covers (only for automatic-equipped models), bright door-sill guards, premium floor mats and a car cover to keep it fresh.

These packages are available only for SE (six-cylinder) and R/T models. They will be painted in shiny materials like the TorRed, Brilliant Black Crystal, Bright Silver Metallic or Bright White. The packages for the interior as well as the exterior add bits and bobs to the muscular coupe’s attractively simple design. It eventually makes the car look faster without the aid of any actual performance kit.

Dodge today pulled the cover off the newest special-edition model of the 2010 Viper SRT10 lineup. The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X is a turn-key, non-street legal race car that is slated to make its on-track debut in the summer of 2010.

Combining the best performance attributes of the record-setting, street-legal Dodge Viper ACR (American Club Racer) and the safety equipment of championship-winning Viper Competition Coupe, the Viper ACR-X is powered by the SRT-developed 8.4-liter V10, equipped with factory headers and a low-restriction exhaust system, that produces 640 horsepower (40 more than production model).

The suspension also is tuned and upgraded specifically for on-track usage, while the weight is lightened by a full 160 pounds (versus the standard production Viper) to take on even the most challenging road course. Additional aerodynamic upgrades improve downforce, while enhancing stability and significantly improving grip in high-speed cornering.

Similar to the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, the Viper ACR-X contains factory-installed safety equipment such as a factory-designed roll cage, fuel cell and race seat. Additional racing components are added to meet the significant durability and reliability requirements for on-track competition.

In what will be the final year of production for the current generation Viper, the ACR-X is the third limited, special-edition model to be introduced by Dodge. ““We’re going to make 2010 the most exciting year for Viper yet with specially developed cars for the street and the track,” added Gilles. “The ACR-X is targeted at road-racing enthusiasts who want to successfully compete in our ultimate American sports car.”

Last month, the SRT team used a testing session at Laguna Seca raceway to shake down the Viper ACR-X for the first time. Behind the wheel was professional driver Kuno Wittmer from the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship series, who was able to run consistent 1:31.00 lap times around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn course. Wittmer’s lap times were more than 3 seconds faster than the street-legal Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR that holds the production car track record at Laguna Seca raceway.

"The Dodge Viper ACR-X is incredible,” said Wittmer. “After a short warm up, I was running lap times as quick as exotic GT race cars. I was blown away by the power and acceleration, and even more surprised at how the ACR-X navigated the challenging Laguna Seca corners and how friendly it was to drive at the limit.

“All aspects of the car work together perfectly to plant all that horsepower and torque without issue,” Wittmer added. “This will be a great package for someone coming out of grassroots racing with a desire to step-up to GT level competition. Dodge nailed it with this one!"

The Viper SRT10 ACR-X is designed to compete in the Viper Racing League, Sports Car Club of America and National Auto Sport Association events.

This Challenger Fails to Meet the Challenge

Detroit’s mid-decade desire to return to the glory days of muscle cars resulted in well-received concepts from the each of the “Big 3” automakers. At Chrysler’s Dodge division, that meant the return of the Challenger.

I was excited about this car when it appeared in concept form at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Dodge designers had clearly recaptured the muscular magnificence of Challenger’s past, creating a look that had me salivating at the thought of one day driving one. It took a while, but that day finally came and I found myself less than impressed.

Having driven a Chrysler 300 SRT-8 with the 6.1 liter HEMI V-8 engine-- loving its quick acceleration and taut, muscular feel-- I was extremely disappointed to find that the Challenger R/T, equipped with the 5.7 liter HEMI V-8, produced little-- if any-- feeling of muscular power. Everything about the driving experience—seating, steering, acceleration—felt loose. It was not what I expected. Yes, the Challenger R/T had power, but it felt more like big touring sedan power than muscle coupe power. I felt like I was driving a boat, not a sports car.

Maybe I need the perspective of having driven a late 70’s model Challenger, like the “General Lee,” featured in the television series “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

My guess is the Challenger SRT-8 is tight. My experience with the challenger R/T was not. Sales seem to bear this out. The Challenger lags behind the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang.

Features

Standard features on the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T test model included remote keyless entry, day/night rear view mirror, cruise control and AM/FM/CD/MP3 radio with 4-speaker sound. SIRIUS Satellite Radio was the only added option.

Summary

As 21st Century muscle cars go, the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T has the look, but doesn’t completely deliver on performance. I expected a lot more.

Race-ready Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X revealed

The Dodge Viper special editions continue, and on Thursday a turnkey race car, called the Viper SRT10 ACR-X, broke cover.

It's not street-legal and is upgraded with a slew of performance modifications aimed at racing enthusiasts. Power grows by 40 hp, to 640 hp, for the 8.4-liter V10. The suspension is tuned for the track, and weight is cut by 160 pounds compared with a standard production Viper.

A Viper ACR-X turned 1:31 laps at Laguna Seca last month, Dodge says. That's about three seconds faster than the time turned in by a production ACR at the track, which the company says is the record.

The car follows on the heels of the Viper 1:33 and Voodoo editions, the other special versions of the Dodge supercar announced so far. The current generation of the Viper will end production as a 2010 model with a run of 500 copies. The ACR-X will have an MSRP of $110,000, and production is expected to begin in the spring of next year.

The powerful racer will launch this summer as part of a new spec series called the Dodge Viper Cup. It will be sanctioned by the current Viper Racing League, but each car must be an ACR. Two races will be run over five weekends, starting July 9-11, 2010, at Virginia International Raceway. The series wraps Oct. 22-24 at Daytona International Speedway.

Dodge’s current Viper still has something to give before the production for it comes to an end this year. The street-legal Viper was taken to the Laguna Seca and took home a course record.

SRT engineer Chris Winkler drove the 2010 Viper SRT 10 to its way to a 1:33.915 lap. An in-vehicle data recording device documented the time. The existing Laguna Seca record was broken by the Viper’s track time by more than 1.1 seconds. The record was recaptured by Dodge, which help it from 2008 until August when a one-off prototype beat it.

The 2010 Viper SRT10 ACR was slightly modified for the Laguna Seca. A shorter fifth gear ratio, a new short shifter and some aerodynamic modifications were added to the Viper to help it clench the track record.

A 2011 Dodge Charger has been spotted while doing a test drive. By the looks of it, the Charger prototype is the SRT8 variant powered by the 6.4 Liter Hemi V8.

The Dodge Charger is expected to roll in the market in late 2010 as a 2011 model. The redesigned Dodge Charger is recently previewed during Chrysler’s five-year product plan announcement. The Dodge Charger reflects the sweeping character line of the 1999 Dodge Charger Concept. It is also expected to combine qualities of the present retro model with the more modern show car that preceded it.

The Dodge charger will come standard with Chrysler’s new Pentastar V6, while the more powerful R/T could have the turbocharged V6 instead of the current 5.7 Liter V8. The SRT8 is expected to be powered by an enlarged 6.4 Liter V8 that boasts at least 450 horsepower.

At the launch of the Dodge Charger next fall, all three engine configurations are expected to be available. The production of the 2011 Dodge Charger at Chrysler’s Brampton, Ontario plant will start October 2010.

The Good

In the 2009 Challenger, Dodge has created a great-looking retro-muscle car that offers three levels of old-school, rear-wheel-drive brute force, and they all handle considerably better than their '70s inspiration.

The Bad

The only thing the Challenger has trouble passing is the gas pump, as the SRT8 gets slapped with a substantial gas-guzzler tax.

The CarGurus View

Muscle cars were never practical, and Dodge’s stylish, retro-classic Challenger fits that mold. The V6-powered SE trim attempts to break out by offering better mileage at a substantial power penalty, but the Hemi-powered R/T and SRT8 provide plenty of tire-smoking power at the expense of efficiency.

At a Glance

One of the most anticipated American retro-muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger appeared briefly in 2008. For 2009 the Challenger is here in earnest and available in three trims: SE, R/T, and SRT8.

The two-door, rear-wheel-drive Challenger seems to have hit the styling middle line – the new version is not an identical copy of the '70s icon, but it's easily recognized as inspired by it. The new version is big – 10.1 inches longer than a Mustang, its direct competitor - and weighs around two tons. It is a striking automobile that has good ride characteristics, owing largely to its use of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger platform.

But of course it’s a muscle car, and this year's line-up offers muscle for every budget. Dodge has planned well with three trims. The “economy” SE packs a 250-hp, 3.5-liter V6. The midlevel R/T brings you to “Hemi” land with a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that produces 370 hp when coupled with the standard five-speed automatic or 375 hp with the optional six-speed manual, which comes right out of the Viper. Open your wallet wider, and you’re at the top of the line: The SRT8 packs a fire-breathing 6.1-liter Hemi V8 that puts out 425 hp and offers the same transmission options as the R/T.

Drivetrain Details

With any American muscle car, the focus and the fun lie under the hood, and the Challenger doesn’t disappoint. The SE's 3.5-liter V6 produces 250 hp with 250 lb-ft of torque and spins through a four-speed automatic - the only transmission available. The EPA rates it at 18/25 mpg. Reviewers feel the SE will appeal to buyers looking for a distinctively styled V6 coupe that will preserve some sanity at the gas pump.

Pop the hood at the R/T trim level, and you'll find a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with Variable Cam Timing that produces 370 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque with the standard five-speed automatic. Or choose 375 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque by selecting the optional six-speed manual transmission, which uses a two-disk clutch system for easier shifting with lower clutch pedal effort.

A Multi-Displacement System, standard with the five-speed automatic, switches from eight to four cylinders during highway cruising to improve fuel economy. The EPA rates this premium-fuel engine at 16/23 mpg with the automatic and 15/23 with the optional manual. Reviewers figure the R/T will appeal to older buyers who’ve always wanted the Challenger of their youthful days. Dodge says the R/T in stock form can do the 0-to-60 jump in less than 6 seconds.

The SRT8 represents the Challenger’s ultimate performance trim, and its buyers will be interested in only one thing: power. Its 6.1-liter Hemi V8 produces 425 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful engine ever offered in the Challenger. This Hemi has been massaged with a high-performance cam and special cylinder heads, intake, and exhaust systems. All of this is set in a reinforced engine block, with a forged steel crankshaft, high-strength piston rods, and a special anti-foaming oil pan. Although SRT8 owners might not be particularly interested, the EPA rates the big Hemi at 13/19 mpg. Most road tests so far have focused on the SRT8 and have generated 0-to-60 times of 4.9 seconds.

Ride & Handling

The Challenger derives many of its structures, parts, and systems from the tried-and-true Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger/Magnum, though the Challenger’s wheelbase is 4 inches shorter. Unlike its rival the Mustang, strapped with a solid rear axle, the Challenger features a five-link independent rear suspension.

The SE is 420 pounds heavier than a Mustang V6 manual, and the R/T is 591 pounds heavier than the V8 Mustang, but not only do the Challengers match or beat the Mustangs' gas mileage, they also handle better. Basically, it’s the Challenger’s independent rear suspension vs. the Mustang’s solid axle. On a smooth surface, there’s little difference, but as soon as the road is less than perfect, the Challenger has an advantage, with its all-around independent suspension smoothing out irregularities that few solid-axle setups could deal with. Reviewers praise the big Challenger’s compliant ride and handling.

Some reviewers note similarities between the ride of the SE and the Dodge Charger – no surprise there, for they have similar mechanicals. The R/T adds a firmer suspension, bigger tires and brakes, and the optional six-speed manual transmission. The ride is firmer, but still compliant enough that reviewers didn’t object to its role as a daily driver. It should be noted that the six-speed manual comes in the Track Pak, which includes the twin-disc clutch, famous pistol-grip shifter, limited-slip rear end, performance steering, load-leveling shocks, hill-start assist (applies the brakes when you start on an incline to prevent roll back), metal pedal covers, and high-performance mufflers.

Moving on up to the performance peak, the STR8, the ride stays civilized, making it a grand highway cruiser. You also get a 180-mph speedometer, and Dodge claims that the “natural” – ungoverned - top end is somewhere above 170 mph. Yes, you can get into a lot of trouble very quickly with the big Hemi. The standard traction control system does a good job of translating wheel spin to forward motion, but you can turn it off and just melt the big 20-inch tires in billows of white smoke.

At all levels, the Challenger’s brakes do a competent job stopping the big coupe. Air ducts in the front fascia of all Challengers direct airflow to the front brakes, which Dodge claims reduces temperatures by 15% during heavy braking. The manual transmission has a solid feel to it and gets different mufflers that produce a deeper tone, while the five-speed automatic performs well with crisp upshifts and fast downshifts. Steering is quick, with less than three turns lock-to-lock, but reviewers feel the Mustang’s steering feels more precise, with the big Dodge exhibiting excessive power assist that limits steering feedback.

Overall, the Challenger handles quite well given its size and bulk, with little body roll, substantial grip, and smooth transitions in quick maneuvers – such as on a slalom course or when engaging the twisties.

Cabin & Comfort

Reviewers point out that original “pony cars” were based on standard sedans and usually had standard sedan interiors. Dodge has followed this formula in its new interpretation of the Challenger. Thus, sitting in a Challenger is much like sitting in a recent Dodge or Chrysler sedan. This is not to say the Challenger’s interior is an unpleasant place to enjoy all the attention it will undoubtedly cause, but it is the least exciting aspect of this exciting car.

Reviewers note that the interior was assembled with care, though the materials are rather ordinary. Most interior materials are dark, with chrome door handles, control knobs, gauge bezels, and a big chrome band around the shifter boot to brighten things up. The front seats are heavy bolstered buckets on the SRT8 that include leather outers and velour inserts to keep you planted. The large steering wheel tilts and telescopes for comfortable adjustment. Gauges – left to right – are fuel, tachometer, speedometer (140, 160, and 180 mph for SE, R/T, and SRT8, respectively) and coolant temp. These gauges are easy to read even in bright daylight, because they are recessed and plainly marked; the SRT8 gauges get a light facing with dark numbers all illuminated with a blue-green light that matches the digital display. The SRT8 also gets a message center in the tach that offers displays for 128 functions including timing your own 0-60 or quarter-mile, braking, and lateral acceleration performance. This message center is optional on the R/T.

The center console, which includes the infotainment and HVAC controls, has a moderate lateral slope toward the driver. Road view is good, with no large blind spots.

The big news is that both the back seat and trunk are fit for human habitation and use! Reviewers were surprised at the ample back seat space when compared to its leading competitor, the Mustang. The back seats will accommodate two smaller adults and a child, although with moderate legroom, reviewers recommend short trips. The back includes a fold-down armrest with cupholders, two central vents, and two integral headrests. The back seats also fold down, adding to the other big news: This muscle car has a usable trunk, sort of. The 16.2-cubic-foot trunk matches the Dodge Charger's and the Audi A5 coupe's, leaving the Mustang behind. Reviewers, however, found fault with the fairly high liftover required to get things into that storage space.

The Challenger shows its performance-car nature in its trims and their various option packages. The SE is the most civil. Standard equipment includes cloth seats, air, power windows,locks, and mirrors, a tilt/telescoping steering column, 60/40-split rear bench seats, cruise control, a four-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo, remote keyless entry, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Options include leather, a power driver’s seat, a moonroof, a nav system, an upgraded stereo system, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and stability control with ABS and traction control.

The R/T adds body trim, 18-inch aluminum wheels and wider tires, a firmer suspension, stability control, and bigger ABS brakes. Options include leather, nav system, a more-powerful stereo system, 20-inch chrome-aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, hood-into-fender stripes and functional hood scoops – they bring cool air into the engine compartment, but not directly into the engine - the 128-function message center, and the Track Pack, mentioned above, which includes the six-speed manual transmission and a number of other performance mechanical upgrades.

The top-line SRT8 has Brembo brakes, a high-performance suspension, a limited-slip rear differential, functional hood scoops, a polished aluminum fuel cap, heated sport seats, and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Many of the R/T's options are standard here, including the bi-xenon headlamps and Sirius satellite radio. The SRT8 has a flat black rear spoiler and a deeper front spoiler. The Track Pack, upgraded Kicker audio system, nav system, hood stripes, and high-performance staggered-size tires are also options.

Safety

All Challengers feature dual front airbags and side curtain airbags. ABS with Brake Assist, traction control, and stability control are optional on the SE and standard on the R/T and SRT8. In addition, Hill Start Assist, automatic headlamps, and a tire pressure monitoring system are also available.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the '09 Challenger five stars across the lineup in front and side impact protection, and four stars for rollover protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet tested the '09 Dodge Challenger.

What Owners Think

The '09 Challenger is a huge hit with owners, virtually all of whom rave about its looks and power. There are, however, a few issues worth mentioning, such as the gas-saver feature with the six-speed manual that makes shifting from first through fourth challenging at best, and the difficulty of accessing the rear seats from the driver's side of the Challenger. Additionally, a significant blind spot is noted when changing lanes and passing. The lack of an optional V8 and/or manual transmission in the Challenger SE also irks many owners.

Much of this is overlooked, however, by the vast majority of owners who can't get enough of the '09 Challenger's acceleration, performance, drive quality, Boston Acoustics sound system, comfort, engine rumble, six-speed manual transmission, fold-down rear seats, and, of course, its killer styling.

On Tuesday, the Dodge Challenger sports coupe was named “Most Satisfying” in a Consumer Reports survey.

The Ram and Challenger news is a rare bright spot for Chrysler in a year that saw a steady downpour of bad news. The company has been through a government-sponsored bankruptcy, gotten a new owner, shuffled executives and pared its dealerships. The automaker also has faced criticism for its current product line, which underscored the importance of the awards announced this week

In the Consumer Reports survey, more Challenger owners said they'd buy another one than owners of any other car.

Numerous special limited-edition models are planned for the 2010 model year, including the Dodge Viper ACR 1:33 Edition, which will pay tribute to the new production-car lap record set on Nov. 24 at Laguna Seca raceway.

The unique two-tone Black Clear Coat/Red Clear Coat exterior color scheme on this model is the opposite from the original Viper ACR. Interior highlights include piano-black console bezels with red gauge highlights complemented with red accent stitching in the seats. Only 33 cars will be produced as 1:33 Edition Viper ACR models.

Tucked back in a dark corner of the 2009 L.A. auto show was a snake pit containing five vicious Vipers harnessing enough horsepower and torque to pull the convention center off its foundation.

Easily overlooked as just a few race cars and production Vipers, we wandered over to find the sinister new Voodoo Edition, the 2000 24 Hours at Daytona overall wining car, and the 2009 Viper ACR that broke the unofficial production-car Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record in 2008. After an all-out ‘ring-time war started with the Nissan GT-R, Porsche 911 GT2, and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, the Viper guys decided to step in with their ACR and put all the supercars to shame with a time of 7:22.1, over four seconds faster than the ZR1 which previously held the crown. The Viper and especially the ACR always provide some nice eye candy so we thought we’d share some treats with all of you.

The 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, on the heels of its recapturing the production car lap record on the road course in Monterey, California.

The SRT10 ACR (American Club Racer) was driven by SRT vehicle dynamics engineer Chris Winkler to a lap record of 1:33.915 around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn course, defeating the previous lap record by more than 1.1 seconds.

In 2008, professional road racer Randy Pobst drove a 2008 Dodge Viper ACR to a one-lap, production car record of 1:35.117 at Laguna Seca raceway while working with Motor Trend. That record stood until August 2009 when a one-off exotic prototype reached 1:35.075.

The Dodge Viper is going into its final year of production for the current-generation model, with approximately 500 scheduled for production in 2010. Dodge has confirmed that it intends to continue producing the vehicle.

Changes to the 2010 ACR include a new short-throw shifter, and redesigned rear wing profile and end plates to increase vehicle aerodynamics and top speed.

At the Chrysler Group business plan presentation today, Ralph Gilles, the recently appointed President and CEO of Dodge, made several product announcements, but one in particular stood out. Gilles announced that when the current run of 500 Vipers is completed by the end of the year, production will end.

The V-10-powered Viper has become an iconic vehicle since production began in 2002. And our drive of the Viper ACR left little doubt that the Viper is still a world-class sports car.

But thankfully, that's not the end of the story. Gilles went on to say that a new Dodge super sports car is in the works, and it should be on the market by summer of 2012. Gilles said that the new car will draw from the Italian performance car heritage of his new Fiat/Alfa overlords and that it will utilize Fiat alliance resources. So it's clear that the new car will have a generous share of Italian DNA.

At this point, it is unclear if the new car will indeed be called Viper. Given that it will likely be an extreme departure from the present car, the question becomes, should it be? Would anything less than a V-10 be a disappointment? What about a hybrid or other next-generation powertrain?

Chrysler’s only about a third of the way through unveiling its extensive five-year business plan to investors and the media, but sports car enthusiasts will likely be interested in this note: The current Dodge Viper will be no more after July 2010.

Ralph Gilles, CEO of the Dodge brand, revealed production of the Viper (one of the first product lines to resume production post-bankruptcy) would cease next summer. Between now and then, only 500 cars will roll off the assembly line in Detroit, Michigan.

This isn’t the end of the line for the Viper altogether. A next-generation model is scheduled to launch in 2012, although details of the future snake are still sketchy. Could the new Viper bear some influence with Fiat’s halo brand, Ferrari? Possibly, but very unlikely. Some Fiat influence will possibly be seen, but we’d be a little surprised if the folks in Maranello were tapped to supply Auburn Hills’ latest serpent.

The Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team from Chrysler Group LLC arrived at Laguna Seca raceway today on a mission - to recapture the production car lap record at the world-renowned road course in Monterey, Calif.

Chris Winkler, an SRT vehicle dynamics engineer piloted a black and red 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR (American Club Racer) to a lap record of 1:33.915 as recorded by Motech in-vehicle data recorder (1:33.944 - as unofficially recorded by trackside clock) around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn course, shattering the previous lap record by more than 1.1 seconds.

"It was definitely exciting but a somewhat uneventful lap overall from behind the steering wheel," said Winkler, who is still learning the intricate details of Laguna Seca raceway, having spent only one other session on the course. "The Dodge Viper ACR has amazing power and handles like a dream, so following my first practice here last month, I came away pretty confident that we'd be able to set a new record."

The Dodge Viper ACR remains the ultimate purpose-built, street-legal track car since its introduction in 2008.

New for the 2010 model year is a shorter fifth gear ratio (changing from 0.74 to 0.80) for improved high-speed acceleration and higher straightaway speeds. This improvement is a direct result of SRT's experience at the 12.9-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany where during the lap-record run in 2008, it was found that a revised gear ratio would have resulted in a higher speed capability and potentially a shorter elapsed time.

The Dodge Viper ACR also receives a new short-throw shifter in 2010 for enhanced driver experience and better performance. The rear wing profile and end plates are redesigned to further optimize the vehicle aerodynamics and improve rear yaw downforce. These changes result in an increase in top speed of 4 mph (to 184 mph).

Powered by the venerable 8.4-liter, V-10 engine with 600 horsepower and 560 lb.-ft. of torque, the Dodge Viper ACR continues to offer extreme performance, including 0-60 mph acceleration in less than 4 seconds, quarter-mile time in the mid 11-second range and 0-100-0 mph in 11 seconds flat.

The Dodge Viper ACR with optional Hard Core Package is more than 80 lbs. lighter than the production SRT10 and offers race-ready hardware and competition tuning for optimal on-track performance.

The four-wheel independent suspension features high-performance aluminum control arms and knuckles, KW suspension with two-way adjustable competition coil-over shock absorbers with remote reservoirs.

The aerodynamic package features a carbon fiber "fanged" splitter in front and adjustable carbon-fiber wing with seven-position stanchions that allow up to an amazing 1,000 lbs. of downforce at 150 mph. Dodge’s gutsy Challenger SRT8 is powered by a 6.1-liter V-8 and leaves the factory with 425 hp under the hood. If that’s not enough for your tastes, stop by SpeedFactory’s stand at November’s SEMA show in Las Vegas. They claim that their modified Challenger puts out close to 700 horses.

Laying the groundwork for such output is an all-aluminum block from Mopar (the factory block is iron), a new aluminum head, and forged engine internals. SpeedFactory then bores and strokes the engine to a whopping 7.2 liters (for a nostalgic 440 cubic-inch displacement) and straps on a centrifugal supercharger. AUBURN HILLS, Mich- Chrysler Group LLC announced today that production will continue for the legendary Dodge Viper SRT10.

Originally slated to cease production in December 2009, the Chrysler Group Conner Avenue Assembly Plant — the exclusive home of Dodge Viper production since 1995 — will continue to build the V-10 powered sports car. Chrysler Group is no longer pursuing a sale of the Viper business assets.

“The Dodge Viper has successfully captured the hearts and imagination of performance enthusiasts around the globe,” said Mike Accavitti, President and Chief Executive Officer, Dodge Brand. “We’re extremely proud that the ultimate American-built sports car with its world-class performance will live on as the iconic image leader for the Dodge brand.”

Introduced as a concept car in 1989 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Dodge Viper was designed and engineered to test public reaction to the concept of a back-to-basics, high-performance, limited production sports car.

The reaction was so overwhelming that customer orders began to flow in even before the auto show was over. Chrysler Corporation immediately decided to determine the production feasibility on transforming the crowd-pleasing Dodge Viper show car into a limited-production sports car in no more than three years.

In May 1990, after months of intensive study and testing, Chrysler Corporation announced that the Dodge Viper, powered by an aluminum V-10 was a “go.”

Dodge Viper production began in May 1992 at the New Mack Assembly Plant and was moved to Conner Avenue in October 1995. Viper V-10 engine production transferred from Mound Road Engine to Conner Avenue Assembly in May 2001. In 2008, Dodge introduced the all-new, fourth generation Dodge Viper SRT10. With more horsepower, more torque and more than 30 exterior and interior color combinations, the latest Viper gives enthusiasts the performance they expect on the track and off, with more factory customization options than before.

So it's not a new engine, or even a new navigation package, but for car lovers, colors are often as important as displacement, especially when they're unique factory colors. The latest color revealed for the 2010 Dodge Challenger, Plum Crazy, is one of those that's almost sure to drive future collectors wild.

Even with modern paint booths and high-tech paints themselves, factory jobs are still better, and collectors know it. While the latest Challengers might not be collectible quite yet, many people purchasing them now are doing so with an eye toward the future as much as toward the past, and the Plum Crazy purple color is one option that just screams "Barrett Jackson" or "Mecum," come 2050.

The 2009 Dodge Charger gets more available V8 power and a few new features. This large car shares its basic design with Chrysler's 300 sedan. Dodge's Magnum wagon, which also shared the Charger's basic design, has been discontinued. Charger comes in four trim levels: base SE, mid-level SXT, sporty R/T, and high-performance SRT8. All are rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available on the SXT and R/T. SE models have a 178-hp 2.7-liter V6 engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Optional on SE and standard on SXT is a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6; a 4-speed automatic transmission is standard with rear-wheel drive while AWD versions have a 5-speed. R/T models get a new version of Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 370 hp, an increase of 30 hp over 2008 models. R/T has a 5-speed automatic and Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System cylinder deactivation. The SRT8 has a 425-hp 6.1-liter Hemi V8 and a 5-speed automatic without cylinder deactivation. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Optional on the R/T is the Road/Track Performance Package, which includes 20-inch wheels and performance suspension. The SRT8 has unique suspension tuning, as well as specific interior and exterior trim. Newly available on the 2009 Dodge Charger is Chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell-phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system with real-time traffic information.

2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8

The 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is available as a new, limited edition "Plum Crazy" model. The rest of this retro-styled sporty car lineup sees no major changes otherwise. Challenger is rear-wheel drive and seats five. Entry-level SE and mid-line R/T trims continue alongside the flagship SRT8. SE has a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. R/T has 372-hp 5.7-liter V8 matched to a 5-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is available on the R/T and models so equipped have 376 hp. The automatic-transmission version of the R/T has Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System cylinder deactivation. SRT8 has a 425-hp 6.1-liter V8 mated to either a 5-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual. All manual-transmission Challengers have a hill-holder clutch that holds the brake for three seconds to aid the driver when launching the vehicle on an incline. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. Keyless engine start is available, along with Chrysler's Uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system. The SRT8 Plum Crazy has specific paint and trim reminiscent of early-1970s Challengers, which used that color.

2010 Dodge Nitro

The 2010 Dodge Nitro model lineup is revised. This midsize SUV uses traditional, truck-type construction and shares its basic design with the Jeep Liberty. Nitro comes in SE and SXT models. The SLT and R/T have been discontinued. All Nitros have a 210-hp 3.7-liter V6 engine that pairs with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Optional on the SXT is a 260-hp 4.0-liter V6 and a 5-speed automatic. Ordering the 4.0 V6 also includes a sport suspension and 20-inch wheels. Newly standard on all is Chrysler's Interactive Decel Fuel Shut Off, which is designed to save fuel by shutting off the gasoline supply during deceleration. Rear-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive are available. The 4WD system can't be left engaged on dry pavement and does not include a low-range gear for off-road use. Maximum towing capacity is 5000 lb. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. Among the available features are leather upholstery, heated front seats, rear-obstacle detection, and Chrysler's Uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell-phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system.

The 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan is just the latest example of a fundamentally sound idea that continues to resonate with families on the go, more than 25 years after its introduction. Not a full-size van, but certainly not a station wagon, the Grand Caravan minivan offers enough seats for eight passengers, a car-like ride, smooth acceleration and reasonable fuel economy.

Available only as a long-wheelbase minivan, the latest look for the Dodge Grand Caravan is squared-off and edgy, compared to the Clorox-bottle shape of the previous generation. It's more integrated with the muscular look of other Dodge cars, but the T-squared lines somehow make the Grand Caravan look less impressive and less upscale than previous editions. It's also less easy to tell the Dodge apart from its Chrysler Town & Country counterpart. From the front, though, it's obvious this is a Dodge: the sporty cross-hair grille telegraphs the family links to the Ram truck and the Charger sedan.
Cars.com says Dodge "really hit the mark with the new styling. It didn't go overboard trying to make it look like something other than a minivan." Kelley Blue Book calls the look "masculine," while Motor Trend chimes in, describing the influences of "Dodge's 'masculine' Charger and Magnum." They also note its "broad shouldered...handsome, expensive presence...[it] actually looks mean looming up in a rear view mirror." On the flip side, Edmunds deems it "unpretentious," and CNet says the shape "doesn't break any new ground," while Autoblog damns it by writing, "the last time we saw sheet metal this flat and unadorned was on a UPS truck."

Inside, the boxy theme prevails again, with lots of hard plastic corners and imposing rectangles dominating the cabin. Light-colored upholstery helps, along with bit glass areas, but the interior's moved into a cheap-and-cheerful territory that Dodge had all but superseded with the previous Grand Caravan. MotherProof says the inside of the 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan is "rather space-shuttley with its boxy, line-y interior design." The review also notes, "This square theme abounds in other Dodge models; it's not exactly warm and inviting.

Dodge Avenger will remain in production till 2012

Chrysler's Sebring, along with its Dodge Avenger cousin, seem to have a new lease on life. Although the troubled midsize cars were scheduled to be replaced after 2010, Fiat management has revealed it will likely retain both models through 2012.

Under Cerberus ownership, both models were to be cancelled following the 2010 model year, but no replacement is currently ready for production. In the meantime, Fiat has decided to give both cars a mild facelift in the next few years.

Although the Sebring receives a revised hood stamping for 2010, a more extensive redesign will come around 2011. Updates to the Dodge Avenger, however, may come sooner. Sources suggest a facelift could happen halfway through the 2010 model year.

2010 Dodge Circuit EV

it wears a new coat of tangerine paint and a cute electrical double-entendre name (Charger, it seems, was already taken), the Circuit is obviously the EV's twin - albeit with a few tweaks. The most notable modification lies with the front fascia, where designers added the Dodge four-bar grille in an attempt to disguise the Circuit's Lotus origins. The remainder of the car - headlamps included - is carried over from Lotus' Europa, which keen-eyed sports car enthusiasts will certainly notice.

Underhood, things haven't changed since we first saw the Dodge EV. The Circuit still uses a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor, which produces a whopping 480 lb-ft of torque. Chrysler claims that torque lets the Circuit hit 0-60 mph in less than five seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 13 seconds. Top end is reportedly more than 120 mph.

Powering that motor is a lithium-ion battery pack, mounted just behind the cabin. Chrysler's mum on the technical details here, but says the batteries will provide enough power for a 150 to 200 mile range. Recharging can be done in four hours via a 220-volt outlet, or in eight hours with a standard 110-volt household outlet.

Chrysler says all of its ENVI concepts - the Circuit included - are production intent and could reach dealers by 2013. That said, we wonder how much of a market exists for a low-volume, high-cost electric roadster built in part by Lotus. Just ask Tesla Motors...

Dodge kills Caliber SRT4

The Caliber SRT4: Dodge's fastest small car is dead.

Dodge is dropping its fastest, most powerful small car for the 2010 model year. The Dodge Caliber SRT4 -- a turbocharged, muscle-bound version of the Caliber -- is being discontinued.

"The Dodge Caliber SRT4 was planned for a limited production run in the highly competitive sport compact market segment," Dodge said in a statement.

Dodge did not provide information on the number of Caliber SRT4s sold since the vehicle was introduced in late 2007.

The Caliber SRT4 was Dodge's attempt to add a little muscle-car panache to its smallest car. It was powered by a 285-hp turbocharged version of the inline four-cylinder engine built at the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance factory in Dundee, Mich., operated jointly with Hyundai and Mitsubishi. The six-speed manual transmission was supplied by Getrag, of Germany.

Chrysler's SRT (Street and Racing Technology) group now has five vehicles for 2010: the Chrysler 300C SRT8; the Dodge Charger SRT8, Challenger SRT8 and Viper SRT10; and the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

Dodge CEO: Petty Switch to Ford 'a Business Decision'

Tthere was mixed reaction in the Richmond International Raceway garage Friday morning to the news that Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) and Yates Racing plans to merge for the 2010 NASCAR season and will field a four-car Ford team under the RPM name.

RPM currently fields Dodges and the move to Ford would leave Dodge only the three-car Penske Racing stable in the Sprint Cup Series.

Dodge Motorsports President and CEO Mike Accavitti issued a statement saying, "Richard (Petty) has made a business decision to merge with Yates Racing. We wish Richard and RPM luck the rest of the season and in the future.''

"Dodge's plan -- to be a championship contender in 2010 with Penske Racing and a solid lineup of drivers -- has not changed."

RPM also announced its 2010 driver lineup of Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, A.J. Allmendinger and Paul Menard. And even some of these drivers, say they were just as surprised by the announcement as everyone else.

There is plenty of irony to go around. Sadler left Yates Racing late in the 2006 season to drive for Evernham Motorsports, which is now RPM. Kahne, the team's lead driver, was involved in a lawsuit with Ford in 2004 after he signed with Evernham to drive Dodges.

The twist in fate wasn't lost on Kahne

"This wasn't really about me, it was about building Richard Petty Motorsports," said Kahne who only found out about the merger Wednesday night -- the day before the formal announcement. "When I left Ford and went through that suit and I wasn't a big fan and they weren't a big fan of me, but time heals and a lot of those people that were involved in that aren't there now. They have new people there and I'm really excited.

Dodge Viper Fast Car

Dodge Viper is a V10 powered sports car developed by Chrysler. Samuel Hubinette won the Formula Drift Championship in 2004 and 2006 drifting a Dodge Viper and the Viper has won several FIA GT Championships and two 24 Hours of Le Mans wins.

The Viper began in 1988 when Chrysler president Bob Lutz recommended building a modern Cobra to designer Tom Gale of Chrysler’s Advanced Design Studios. Carroll Shelby was influential in design also and used the legendary AC Cobra and Shelby Cobra Daytona as his inspiration. At the time, Lamborghini was a subsidiary of Chrysler and they were tasked with casting a prototype aluminum engine block for the Viper based on Dodge’s V10 truck engine.

The concept car was originally named Copperhead and first appeared at the North American International Auto Show in 1989. The concept was a big hit and Chrysler chief engineer Roy Sjeoberg and Team Viper got the ok to develop the concept car into a standard production vehicle. In May 1990, Lee Iacocca approved production of the Viper and retail shipments began in January 1992.

First generation SR (1992–1995)

The heart of the Viper is its V10 aluminum truck engine. Chrysler’s intention for the new Viper was clear, performance is first priority. The SR generation lacked ABS brakes, traction control, door handles, a roof, windows, or any luxury amenities what so ever. The SR Viper had a soft top that was used as a storage/rain cover. Carroll Shelby drove a SR Viper as the pace car in the 1991 Indianapolis 500.

Second generation SR (1996–2002)

In 1996 a coupe model called the GTS was introduced with a lighter more powerful engine. The roof featured raised sections known as the “double bubble” above each seat to accommodate drivers wearing helmets. In 1999 18” wheels and an improved exhaust system further refined the Viper. Perhaps not technically a new generation, the second SR Viper increased horsepower, stiffened and lightened chassis, improved suspension and braking - ABS system introduced in 2001. The Viper GTS was chosen as the pace car for the 1996 Indianapolis 500.

In 2008, power for the Viper increased to 600 horsepower (450 kW) and 560 lb ft (759 Nm) of torque. Engine displacement increased to 8.4 liters (512 ci/8354 cc) and modifications like better flowing heads with larger valves, Mechadyne variable valve timing, and dual electronic throttle bodies further tuned the Viper engine. Rev limit increased by 300 rpm due to improved valve-train stability and the new camshaft profiles and valve-springs. The development of the engine was done in conjunction with McLaren Automotive and Ricardo Consulting Engineers.

Hennessey Performance Engineering, HPE for short, offers an aftermarket upgrade that increases the power output of the Viper to about 1050 hp (733 kW) 983.5 hp at the wheels and 1,100 ft lbf (1,490 Nm) of torque. Increased engine displacement and twin Garett ball bearing turbochargers are the main modifications that give the Hennessey Viper Venom its power. Other Hennessey mods include suspension, VenomAero body kit, bigger brakes, bigger wheels and tires, and an upgraded differential.

Dodge calls RPM defection a 'business decision'

The head of Dodge Motorsports on Friday called Richard Petty's defection a "business decision" that won't affect the manufacturer's participation in NASCAR.

Richard Petty Motorsports has signed a letter-of-intent to merge with Yates Racing and field a four-car Ford team next season. It leaves Dodge with just three Roger Penske-owned cars in its 2010 lineup.

But president and CEO Mike Accavitti said that's enough for Dodge, which has had to continuously reinforce its commitment to NASCAR because of the cash problems that forced parent-company Chrysler into Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization earlier this year.

"Dodge's plan — to be a championship contender in 2010 with Penske Racing and a solid lineup of drivers — has not changed," Accavitti said. "We remain firmly focused on our objectives to be the leading manufacturer in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, win races and compete for the Sprint Cup at the right level."

RPM, the team born in a January merger between Petty Enterprises and Gillett-Evernham Racing, has been shopping for a new manufacturer since its funding from Dodge slowed earlier this season. The cutbacks during its restructuring forced RPM into at least two rounds of layoffs and payroll adjustments, all while trying to get star driver Kasey Kahne into the Chase for the championship.

Kahne is in position to grab one of the 12 berths, using a win last weekend at Atlanta to move up to sixth in the standings headed into Saturday night's deciding race at Richmond International Raceway. But the impending move to Ford has him wondering about the level of Dodge support he'll receive during the critical 10-race title hunt.

"I thought about it," he admitted. "But I can't really be concerned. I'm just going to go on with my business, and hopefully it won't affect us."

Dodge Ram Is Mopar's Most-Accessorized Vehicle

In terms of vehicle accessorizing, truck owners distinguish themselves from other automotive enthusiast groups with their heavy consumption of factory and aftermarket parts and accessories. Case in point: Chrysler's factory parts and accessories division, Mopar, has named the Dodge Ram the most accessorized vehicle in Chrysler's current lineup.

Perhaps it's better for Chrysler in the long run; if it ends up saving them money to pay for better materials and designers, people may actually buy their products (here's a hint: taking the strakes off the Sebring's hood is a laughable attempt to make the car look better).

And here's something funny: someone somewhere (obviously a nutbar) said that the SRT4 badge should have been put on the Avenger instead of the Caliber. Here's a thought: no it shouldn't have, because that car is so awful it needs to stop existing yesterday.

I get painful abdominal cramps when one is near me. My vision blurs if I actually look directly at one. No amount of performance packages could make that re-skinned Sebring appealing, and you know it. In fact, both should be sent down to Gitmo and prisoners should be forced to look at those spawn of hell. That'll make the bastards talk.

An Austrian tuner Königseder has no fear in case of its modifications. It can bravely start any tuning of heaviest caliber. So its newest work is a modification of American beauty called Dodge Caliber.

The Dodge Caliber is a project from DaimlerChrysler’s portfolio. It attracts especially with interesting shapes, fastback body and typical Dodge front mask that reminds muscles of American trucks. In Europe we can purchase this vehicle in three various equipments (S, SE, SXT) and with two gasoline and one diesel engine.

The gasoline V4s has 1.8 or 2.0 liters and their made by World Engine in alliance with GEMA (Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance). This alliance includes companies such as Daimler Chrysler, Hyundai Motor Company and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. The weaker 1.8 liter produces 110kW (150hp) at 6500 rpm and 168Nm of torque at 5200rpm.

The 2.0 liter engine is a little bit stronger and it’s able to produce 115kw (157hp) and 190Nm of torque at 5100rpm.

The 4-cylinder turbo diesel has 103kW (140hp) and 310Nm of torque at 1750rpm. It has VGT technology and four valves per cylinder, electronically controlled direct injection of fuel under high pressure (2000 bar). So this improves fuel burning and that causes better performance and fuel economy.

The Caliber is so original and typical Dodge vehicle that there’s no way to make a mistake with another car. And the tuner Königseder put some Austrian elegance to this American beauty.

The mask was changed on the first place. Now it looks less brutal than in the original Dodge. Front bumper is a little bit wiser and there can be front diffusers.

The side line of the vehicle is prettified with side sills that are made of two parts in front and at the back. Same broadening has been used in case of the both bumpers. At the back we can find also a stylish roof spoiler.

Of course, also exhaust tip makes the rear part sportier and more pleasure. So this is a short list of Königseder’s changes made on this car. But there are more modifications for the Dodge caliber to mention.

This Dodge can be closer to the road about 30mm with lowering springs and also with sporting KW shock-absorbers. Its engines have enough power so we need more stability on the road.

But Königseder needs more power, so it can reprogram the ECU and boost the diesel engine to 175hp and 390Nm.
